I’ve worked with Joel for almost 20 years. At times he would be a boss, at times a mentor, sometimes he would be like a brother and other times like a father but above all this he was always a friend. Joel had taught me so much and helped me experience life and I will always be in his debt.
I have many fond memories of him and our “adventures”. One that exemplifies how he watched out for me was during one of my first trips to Las Vegas. Having spent 8 hours walking the Las Vegas Convention Center floor we tiredly returned to the hotel. Loaded down with brochures and still wearing our convention badges we entered the hotel lobby. There we were approached by a well dressed woman who struck up a conversation with us. As I responded to her questions Joel keep saying, “Come on Mike let’s go” I found this unusual as Joel was always one to take the time to speak with someone. Finally he pulled me along and on our way to the elevators I said to him, “She was a nice woman. I wonder who she is waiting for?” He turned to me and said, “You!” Confused I replied “Huh?” Joel, “Mike, she is hooker.” On another one of our trips, Joel wanted sushi so we went to a sushi bar. This was my first (and last) time eating sushi. He guided me as what to eat and knowing that I was not very adventurous when it came to the culinary arts, what not to eat.
Joel and I had developed a personal and professional trust of each other that is found only in the closest relationships. When Joel passed a part of me had passed but he will always live in my heart and memories. May he rest in peace.

I worked for Joel for six years, the happiest and most rewarding of my career. I left Action a few years back but still kept in touch and always felt welcome when I would pop in to visit. This was easy to do because I truly feel as though I had made more than business contacts, I have made friends. Joel was the type of boss you loved to work for, no matter how crazy a request or deadline that was upon us he somehow always made it not only doable but also that if we didn’t meet the clients request it would be ok as long as we did our best. I cannot remember a due date that wasn’t met, because we just didn’t want to let Joel down. I said Joel was a friend, that is how I feel, but I agree with Mike’s comment that he had a fatherly influence I just didn’t want to disappoint him. I will miss him, and that smile. I wish I could make it to the service but know that I will keep him in my thoughts and prayers… Rest in peace Joel

When I first started working for Action, 11 years ago, it was supposed to be a “pit” stop until I found something in my field of work. Well here I am and I wouldn’t trade these last 11 years for anything. Joel may have been the owner and President of our company but he never acted like anything other than another employee working hard every day to meet our customer’s needs. He was never unapproachable, when I had something to say to him and went in and closed his door (with hands on hips) he would say “oh, no, what did I do now”?
He was always willing to listen to ideas and would actually understand when things needed to be acted on. The success of Action Duplication is because of the warm and caring person Joel was and his family can be proud of all of his accomplishments. Our clients knew that Joel and his company cared about them, a rare find in business today. I will truly miss him. Joel, you can rest knowing we will continue to make Action Duplication something to be proud of, I love you!

As Joel knew, I’m not big with words. Joel was a good person who always took care of the people around him. And I was around him for over seventeen years. I am honored and fortunate to be one of the first hires at Action Duplication. I got to experience Joel’s joy and pride as his dream grew and prospered. As his company grew, the more generous he was with the people in his life, employees included. Because I believe he thought of the people who worked for him as more then employees, we all became family. Thank you, Joel, for the belief you had in me. You gave me many opportunities to do so many different things for your company. I write these words with great respect and consider myself lucky to have known him for such a long time. I will think of you every time I enjoy a good Ashton. You are missed.

I had the wonderful fortune of knowing and working directly for Joel over the past 8 years. I remember at my interview that I liked him the minute I met him and that feeling never waned in the ensuing time. He made me proud to be his employee and he treated all of us who worked with him like we were family; as I believe to him, we were. Joel was very serious about his business and he maintained one of the most admirable work ethics in anyone I’ve known. But he also really cared about everyone. He would start each and every day with a friendly hello and ask what you did the night before and wanted to make sure everything was well in your personal life. Then he would get down to business for 8-10 hours and at the end of the day want to know that you were going to have an enjoyable evening. To spend time with Joel outside of work was always a pleasure. He was extremely generous and always happy to have you around. In simple words, Joel made people feel good. He also was one of the most reasonable people I’ve ever known. Joel would listen to you and cared about you had to say. There are numerous times he would change his outlook based on my thoughts. I can’t overstate how much I respected him for that. You knew that your opinions mattered to him. Joel was a fabulous inspiration to me, as he was to many of us. I will miss him and I sincerely send my condolences to his family and to everyone whose life he touched.

Over the next several days, many people will relate their fond memories of times they shared with Joel. Some will be humorous, some sad, and all will be heartfelt. Of the many that I recall, one has stuck with me, for reasons that all who knew Joel can relate to.
Joel and I would often be at Action after hours, and it was a common occurrence for him to wander into my office around 6:30 or so, sit down, and shoot the breeze about business, family, the Phillies, just about anything; these were two friends chatting, not the President and an employee.
Anyway, one evening, Joel appeared and began talking. The conversation covered many topics, but the one that stuck out in my mind was when he expressed his deep sense of responsibility for the well-being of the 60+ employees of Action Duplication and their dependents. The welfare of others, whether it was you, a member of your family, or the less fortunate kids in the PAL program, was of paramount importance to him.
In my opinion, that is the fabric of a man, and I will cherish his memory. He may have been your boss, but he was your friend first.
Joel, you made a prophet out of Billy Joel, and a liar out of Leo Durocher.
Rest in peace, dear friend.

Joel always seemed to take the wrong trail when skiing. Joel always seemed to take the right trail through life. So bright, so caring and soooooo funny. An evening with Joel over Japanese food was always a hoot as Joel ate his way through his plate and everyone elses. As a friend and business associate, I will miss him very much. I thought of him often in good times, I thought of him ofdten during his illness and I will think of him often now that he is at peace.

I’ve known Joel since 2001. Didn’t get to become friendly with him until the past two years. I’m fortunate to have at least shared a couple of years of friendship with him. Joel was one of the good guys within the media manufacturing business. If advise was needed, Joel was always there to help. When AIMMA looked for support, Joel was always available to help. If Joel’s staff is a reflection of his personality and shares his values (and I know they do), Action is left in great hands. Rest in peace my friend.

I am greatful to be one of the many who can say Joel was my Friend. Joel’s ways of doing business, growing his company and leading his staff has been and always will be an inspiration for me. It was always great to ask Joel how is your family…the pride of his loved ones would light up his face. That pride clearly carried through into his 2nd family at Action as well.
I will miss you Joel!

My relationship with Joel began some 23 plus years ago, when he became a client of mine.We quickly became friends
and have remained friends for all these years.
I’ll never forget the sunny afternoon we met on the tennis court at Jenkintown High School. We had planned on hitting the ball around and discussing a new opportunity,
presenting itself at Action Duplication.Well being as competitive as Joel was, we began a knocked down, winner take all, tennis match.
I think we both lost a few pounds, but decided to wet our whistle’s at a local watering hole.
Joel promised me an opportunity to come grow with his young company.
I believed in Joel and said yes to our future.
Thankfully, I’m still here, but will miss Joel terribly.
We shared many fine times together over the years and had lot’s of heart to heart conversations.
He was always there for me, through thick and thin.
Joel always believed in FAMILY FIRST, and that’s what I consider him, FAMILY.
I’m proud to call him my friend and mentor.
His memory will live on with me forever,

It was with great sadness that I learned of Joel’s passing. I’ve known him for years, both in the video field, as well as on the ball field. We played against each other in the Chestnut Hill softball league, and I still remember the time he made a perfect throw to second to try to get me out…unfortunately, the shortstop missed the throw and the ball hit me square in the right ear-boy, was I in pain! Joel and I used to laugh about that play…we also shared skiing stories and I was hoping to take a run with him at Snowmass some day…..Of course, he ran a first rate business, with honesty and integrity that is getting more rare today….
My condolences to his family and to his Action family….our prayers are with you….Larry Kirschner

Joel’s generosity and kindness won me over from the moment I met him. He inspired people to do things they did not know were possible. His vision of his business and his life will always be a model that will guide me. But greater than that is the blessing that I could call him my friend. Whether we were working or traveling or relaxing, we had a tremendous amount of fun. He embraced every nuance of life with fascination and delight. I will miss him and hold those memories close.

First, my condolences go out to Joel’s family.
I’ve know Joel for over 20 years, on both a personal and professional level. There has never been a finer business man than Joel. Starting with a small duplication company and turning it into one of the country’s premier facilities…Joel always remember from where he came. Although we weren’t Action’s largest customers….Joel made you feel as if you were. He always took calls, spent time speaking with you about everything from the industry to football. I’ll never forget a large VHS order we made…and I made an error by giving the wrong master. Joel re-dubbed the 5000 VHS for me…at cost. He realized the money was going to come out of my pocket…and wanted to help. This level of friendship and business consideration is not often seen in todays world.
Joel was a world class man whom I had many laughs with. I will miss him tremendously.

I am overcome with sadness as I just learned of Joel’s passing. I would like to offer my deepest sympathy and condolences to his family and friends.
I first met Joel when he was Production Manager at Channel 17, over 20 years ago. He was given the difficult task of showing me around on my first day of work immediately following a return to work by the striking technical staff. He, being a member of management, displayed exquisite professionalism in a tense atmosphere. And it was a pleasure working with him during my time there.
Later in our careers, when requiring the services of Action Duplication, there was no hesitation to trust the professionalism and honesty Joel had brought to his new business. Many times he answered questions and came through on deadlines for my clients’ projects.
My thoughts and prayers are with Joel’s family. He will be dearly missed.

I’d like to recall a quick story of Joel. We were on an AVDA (AIMMA) trip in the Bahamas or Grand Cayman Islands. Joel had a video camera and decided he wanted to use it while walking through the casino. Needless to say this did not go over well and I believe Joel lost his video tape on that day to casino management. We enjoyed some laughs; I don’t think Joel did anymore videotaping in the casinos after that.
God Bless!

Dear Richard, Patsy and everyone,
I just now received this terrible news. I remember first meeting Joel (and you too Richard) in 7th grade. Elkins Park Junior High. So many years ago. I remember learning to tell you two apart. Obvious to some – an accomplishment back then. And I remember my most recent conversations with Joel at some of our high school reunions. I remember at our 35th reunion, talking about living through the Kennedy assassination together. I was touched to learn that he still lived in the community where we grew up. A loyal soul if ever there was one. He was a sweet kind man. How very sad to learn that he is gone. I send you all warm wishes and my deepest sympathy – wishes for days of peace ahead.

The outpouring of sadness in the loss of such a wonderful man comes as no surprise….for it is times like this that remind each of us of the important role we play in each others lives.
I recall that it was always nice to receive written correspondence, a phone call…or be in the presence of Joel Levitt…a class act through and through…no hidden agendas…straight forward and…a role model to many.
I have a statement on my desk from an article entitled Life Lessons, which is seemingly right for a time such as this, for it reminds me of how Joel Levitt impacted my life.
“The life you live, is the lesson you teach”
Thank you Joel for being this example.
I will miss you.

I had the pleasure of working for Action Duplication from November of 2002 until July of 2005 as one of the company’s Customer Service Reps. One of my biggest impressions of Joel was during my interviewing process. I must have talked to 4-5 individuals during the process and when I was told I’d be meeting with the President of the company I was instantly nervous as I knew from the get-go that Action was the type of company I wanted to work for and the people I wanted to work with. Well, from the minute Joel sat down with me he came across as a very warm and kind hearted man who was just trying to get a feel for me to be a part of what was not just a company but a family of many individuals and Joel being the father figure. I relaxed and just talked to him man to man in a very relaxed manner.
Well, I got the job and for the next 2 and a 1/2 years that I worked for Action, knowing that I was part of not just a job or company, but part of a family was beyond the best for me and in knowing that it was Joel that kept this philosophy burning, his Company meant a great to me and made it indeed very hard for me to say goodbye to him and my other friends, co-workers and family at Action when I decided to move from Philadelphia to Cleveland. Since I’ve been here, my memories of Action and the atmosphere that Joel precipitated came to my mind many times over. Since 2005, because of Joel, I truly believe that I was a part of a once in a lifetime chance to work for and with some great individuals and clients…who, to this day, some I keep in steady contact with and hope to always.
I’ll miss Joel and wish only the best to the Levitt family, the employees of Action Duplication and all the clients and friends of his. May all your lives be blessed with the kind of upbeat and positive attitude that Joel eminated.

With sadness, I only heard this news this afternoon too late to be at Raphael. I write this knowing that it is from my heart and I wish I could have said all of this today to Patsy and the family. Please remember my words and thoughts of all of you in this time.
In 1979, Joel was brave enough to pluck me from a local tv station in Illinois to come to Philadelphia to fill his position as a director at Channel 17 after he had been promoted from that position. He did need some convincing from his assistant Linda MacLachlin who we said goodbye to a year ago also, but the choice was still his.
I think I may have been the first mid-westerner Joel ever met professionally. And Joel was first easterner I ever met of any note. I will be forever greatful to Joel for teaching me his “Philadelphia”. And I will always believe he understood my quiet, midwest approach to clients and directing.
He later told me that he would divide the clients among our other director and myself based on our personalities. Not our directing skills. Very wise.
We were only together for three years at the station but contunued our freindship for 25 years after that. He left there and I was able to be a client of his early Action days. We continued to be each others fan until the last time I saw him wandering around Ashburn Alley at Citizens Bank Park like a good fan where I am today.
And a phone call about six weeks ago with Joel will stay with me forever. I started the call being supportive and did so until he cut me off and turned the conversation around to tell me how much I meant to him over the years and how glad he was for my later successes. We both silently knew everything was not well but that did not get in the way of his grace and friendship in that call.
Joel is now gone and at peace. But he will never be gone with me as long as I can pass his care for me on to someone else.

I first met Joel in the 1980’s and was struck by what a genuine, great guy he was. He was always thinking outside the box – about how he could be the most helpful in any situation… making you feel like you were all he had to worry about that day. I always had this comfort that I could talk to Joel as a friend – and that he would do his best to make any complication turn out OK – at any cost. I know for years people at Action were probably frustrated with me because I would only call Joel himself for orders, changes, challenges, etc… and he kept being patient with me, while gently telling me I really can count on other people at Action to help take just as good care of me as he did… and yes, he was right on a professional level – but I still enjoyed calling him periodically just to catch up and run ideas by him! I feel so sad and I want to send my condolences to his family – both immediate family and the family I know he had at Action Duplication. He truly will be missed!

I first met Joel back in the ’70s when he was in production at Channel 17 (or was it Channel 48?). I headed an in-house ad agency and was producing commercials for Anthony, The Family Plumber. We immediately bonded and I considered Joel a real professional. Over the years, we would meet in professional circles, primarily at Philly Ad Club Meetings. He was a person that I came to really like and I always looked forward to talking with him. We did business over the years as my career took me to different companies. Even though I haven’t spoken to Joel in quite some time, when I saw the notice in the newspaper, I must have said something out loud. My wife asked me what was wrong and I answered, “My friend Joel Levitt passed away.” In my mind, even though Joel and I didn’t speak that often, I did consider him a friend, and I was fortunate to have known him. In closing, if someone asks me to describe him, I will simply reply, “He was a really nice guy and a very ethical business person.” To his family and business associates, I am so sorry for your loss! I first met Joel in 1994 when I started working at Action Duplication as a temp. I was impressed how he made me feel welcomed and part of the family so quickly and was a big part of the reason I decided to stay at Action when offered a permanent position. I remember sitting and talking about business and family in office many of nights after every one else was gone. He definitely made a positive impression on me over my time there, and I can truly say he was and still remain a mentor to me. We sat and talked about how he started the company in his basement and I used that as part of the inspiration when I started my own business.
God, there are so many good things I could recall about him, but one thing always stuck in my mind is how much he cared about his employees. He even touched my mother who only met him once, and ask about him every time I bring Action up in conversation. Because of Joel, she has a complete house full of furniture that he gave to us one year. Also, who can forget the joy he had when passing out the holiday bonus checks every year and the kiss & hug we shared at the time…
My condolences go out to Patsy and his family…He will definitely be missed by all, and never forgotten!

Joel and I met in 1999 when he reached out and asked me to join the AVDA (now AIMMA). We found we had much in common in our respective businesses and fast became friends. We shared much about our business and personal philosophy and often found that our conversations – whether on the phone or in person, would carry us long after we originally intended. I was fortunate to go on a couple of fishing trips with Joel – great times that I will never forget. He had a profound impact on a lot of people, and I am no exception. While his passing saddens me, I feel honored to have shared time with Joel and have learned much from how he carried himself. Joel was a class guy who treated people with great dignity and earned the respect of everyone he met. I will miss Joel’s infectious laugh, positive attitude and the passion he showed for his business, employees and family that can only serve as an example for which to aspire.
To Patsy and his family, my heartfelt condolences go out to you in this most difficult time.

Dear Levitt Family,
Joel was a admirable person. I hope someone has captured his life story. He can be an inspiration to many.
I knew him since he started Action Duplication many many years ago. I was impressed by his drive and fortitude to make the business a success in one of the most competitive sectors of the video industry.
He surprised me many times with his personal way. Though I may not have since him for a long while, when he met me, it would be just like we saw each other the other day.
He gave his full attention to any problem placed before him. I always felt confident work would get done because of his deep commitment to his customers.
Joel built a fine staff. Working with Lucy, in particular, was as assuring as working with Joel himself. I think Joel’s ability to pick people and keep his promises made Action Duplication the success that it is.
I hope you are all well and have many good memories to keep your spirits strong.
Yours,

My wife, Lorraine Asam is Patsy’s first cousin. Both Patsy and Joel attended our wedding in 2001. It was the first time I had met either Joel or Patsy, although Lori spoke often about them both.
I have been playing the piano since age 8 (am now 57). In 2003, at the encouragement of my wife, I began to build my home recording studio. By 2006, enough original material had been recorded, so I began putting together my first CD.
Entitled “meadowmorphosis”, I needed an economical yet professional way to duplicate copies. Lori suggested that I contact Action Duplication.
Without the professional and personal assistance provided by Joel and his exemplary staff, this project and those that followed, might never have been.
I am currently wrapping up the loose ends on my 4th CD, to be called “VOICES (of the Angels) and am once again taking the final duplication process to AD.
Both my wife and I share in the sadness with Joel’s family and friends. He was an amazing fellow and will be deeply missed.

I worked for Joel 8 years, but my favorite Joel memory is the last one I have. Our dynamic was always casual. As he began to show the signs of his illness I’d try to act the same, use humor and keep it light. I’d act as if nothing was differant. I’d hear he was visiting and hope as I rounded the corner he’d shock me with his progress. Sadly each time I saw him I wondered if it was the last. I also lamented the fact our last interaction would be some vapid chitchat. The last time he came in I walked in to the lobby as Joel sat across the room. I approached him with my hand out to shake it, but he instead started to lift himself out of the chair to hug me. At this time in his illness that was quite an ordeal for Joel, and as we embraced I said, “Joel, I’m not as important as all that” in an attempt at some self-effacing humor. His reply was, “Yes you are.” At that point he sat back down and someone else who was standing nearby started a conversation. I said nothing more. Eventually I walked back to my room, he left without my seeing him again. I really felt that would be the last time I’d see him, and the memory of that moment was unsettling. But when I heard he had passed, my feelings changed with regard to that moment. It suddenly seemed perfect to me, one time we changed our dynamic to hug and say goodbye. Years from now I won’t remember Joel as the man who employed me for a number of years, but as the author of my perfect moment.

I met Joel and Mike in the “early days” of Action Duplication. What a true gentleman and professional. Joel always had a smile on his face and never hesitated to chat about the business, the world and family. Although there would sometimes be great spans of time between our conversations, I always felt that I was talking to a “everday” friend. We all know how time consuming it is to run a business, Joel always had time for me. When I spoke to him a few months back, nothing had changed. I will truly miss him.

I am devastated to hear of Joel’s passing. I worked with Joel since he was at Ch. 17, shooting Silo commercials. I remember sending him flowers the day his son was born. The last I saw him was a year or so ago, when I stopped by to drop off a CD for duplicating. We chatted about the coincidence of using the same videographer for our daughter’s weddings. He was such a proud father.
A true gentleman and a really nice guy.
He will be missed.

I have been using Action Duplication for all my needs for the past 8 years. Once I found Joel, there was really no need to work with any other video production house. Joel was one of the finest vendors I have ever worked with. He always made me comfortable that the job would get done on time and that it would be the highest quality. But beyond that, he was always pleasant and friendly and made me feel like it was an honor for him to be talking to me. When my son had a bar mitzvah and I asked him to duplicate the video 10 times for family members, he refused to charge me and explained that it was his gift to me. He was a total class act, a truly fine human being who will be sorely missed. May his family be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.
Best wishes,

I remember sitting at the Cheltenham pool with Patsy + Joel such a very long time ago – Philippe and Chad were in the pool playing together, and Joel and I were talking about starting our businesses – seems so very long ago and yet the memory is so vivid. We were scared but we did it anyway and over the years Joel and I would email or call one another to check in and share our progress. It was always a delight to hear how well he was doing – he was always so supportive and kind to me as we shared war stories!
We grew up in business together – our children are still in touch which is a treasure. My heart goes out to all of you – I am so sad today – I will miss Joel and his laughter – and his smarts – Patsy….sending a big hug to you – may you find peace.

I will miss Joel very much.
I don’t know many individuals who were as dedicated to their enterprise, their craft, or their customers as Joel was. As busy as he was he always had time for a hello and a quick catch-up whenever I stuck my head in his door. A big reason that Action has been our go-to vendor over the years was the way Joel demonstrated his willingness to work with us, shepherd us through the issues we didn’t understand, and ALWAYS get things done. He often acted as our order taker and question answerer, even though he didn’t have to; but he understood that these smaller things mattered as much as the big picture issues, and he never shied away from taking time for us – a mark of a shrewd businessman, and a man with a big heart.
The industry has lost a real leader. Without question, Action Duplication staff, family, friends, and everyone here at NorthStar will sorely miss him.

Joel and I go back to the primeval days of video in Philadelphia. During that time I have never met anyone with the same dogged determinism that Joel demonstrated everytime I worked with him. He was the consummate professional.
There is no question that Joel was one of the leading pioneers of an industry that didn’t exist prior to his plunging into it. The success of many of us in the video industry is due in large part to Joel’s vision and determination to make video communications work.
We in marketing and advertising community all owe Joel a great debt of gratitude for what he has accomplished to promote and further the business of video communications in the Philadelphia area. His sprit and entrepreneurialism will be sorely missed, as will his humor and kind nature.

It is with great sadness that I send my deepest condolences to the Levitt and Action Duplication families. In truth, as a client Joel always made me feel more like family than client over the many years we worked together. I remember meeting him in the good old days of ITVA and recall he was always there to support the organization and was someone I always looked forward to seeing and chatting with at gatherings. I remember visiting him in his original, small operations behind IKEA. Who knew then what Action would grow to be: a world-class massive operation with a large dedicated staff lead by an extraordinary man. Correction, the “extraordinary man” part we already knew. I remember sitting in Joel’s car after an ITVA meeting around 1989. He wanted my advice about whether there was room in Philadelphia for another duplicator. It was a low point because he had been recently laid off. He had the idea to start a new business – which became Action Duplication – but was worried that it was too risky. His family depended on him. I don’t know if what I said encouraged him to take the risk or not. Joel may have asked dozens of people the same question. Though I was always glad that he did take the chance, became a friendly competitor of Ed Harding and Media Concepts, and that Action Duplication flourished. Joel and Action Duplication became an integral part of the media community in Philadelphia.
Joel was a class act. One of the 110 percenters. People who do what they say and then always do a little more. People who give of themselves to make things a bit better for everyone. I know how much of a loss this must be to his family and extend my heartfelt condolences to them. Losing Joel is a loss for our industry and our community. I’ll miss you Joel.

I am so saddened to learn of Joel’s passing. My thoughts and prayers are with Patsy and his family and all of his many friends who he touched throughout the years.
Mr friendship with Joel began when I joined WPHL in 1975, and over the next 10 years first he worked for me when I was Production Manager, and then when I left and then came back to work on Phillies telecasts again I worked for him when he was Production Manager, so we often kidded about being each others boss. It was wonderful to keep in touch over the years as my career took me all over the country, and to drop in from time to time when I was home in Philly and check in on how things were going as Action grew and grew.
At a time like this, when it’s good to remember old friends, I’d like to share my favorite story about Joel. After the Phils won the World Series in 1980, we got the championship trophy one afternoon so we could shoot some video of it in our studio. We had to pick it up at a bank, and were to return it the next morning. We were trying to figure out a safe place to put it overnight, since it was worth quite a bit of money, to say nothing of it’s value to fans. The station didn’t have a space that was really secure, so Joel “volunteered” to take it home. Some of you may have enjoyed visiting with the trophy that night.
We will all miss him.

Joel truely was an inspiration for anyone who isn’t appreciating every moment of their lives. Joel loved his family, his company and especially his life as a whole. I am comforted with having no doubt that Joel is sitting by God’s side telling him how grateful he is to have had such a great life. There is so much in our lives that we should be grateful for. So many moments we let pass us by. If there is any good to come from such a great loss – let it be that we all live each moment as if it might be our last. Don’t hurt or harm anyone in the process and try to love as much as we can. Maybe just maybe we will see Joel again IF we deserve to. Love and happiness to everyone. Always. Dovie O’Neil

I ran into Joel last June at Twisted Dune Golf Course near Atlantic City. I hadn’t seen him for quite awhile and didn’t even know that he played golf. But it was as if we had seen each other just the day before. Joel was, as always, the most warm and friendly of people.
Shortly thereafter, I heard about his dire prognosis but I had no idea that he would be gone so soon.
Since I didn’t see Joel regularly, it would be foolish to say that I’ll miss him – no, but what I’ll miss is the idea of him – the realzation that he is no longer here, in this world, contnuing to be the wonderful guy that he was. There was a time when we saw each other several times a day – but that was long ago. Now, however, I’ll see him much more often, in my mind’s eye, always smiling, always ready to go the extra mile to make sure that his customrs and friends were never in need.

I met Joel for the first time in 1983 when I came down from Vermont to interview for a Producer/Director position at Channel 17. Joel invited me to lunch with the Program Manager, Zvi, at a local Chinese restaurant. I had something simple and bland and watched Joel and Zvi eat very spicy food with abandon. Then Joel and Zvi proceeded to throw out personal questions about my background while they started to both produce a river of sweat. It took all my composure to keep from laughing myself silly as they both tried to be somewhat casual about the fact that they were both going to need a shower in about 15 minutes. For some reason they both agreed that hiring me would be a good idea, so in a few weeks I drove out of the 12 feet of snow at home and pulled a U-Haul down to Philadelphia, where I stayed for over 20 years.
My relationship with Joel was always a good one, occasionally somewhat strained by the fact that he had to deal with a know-it-all with a very limited understanding of station politics. I have two stories about that.
The first was when I was directing a live show and some technical renovations were being done at the same time. In the middle of the program the control room went dark and we were immediately off the air. I went running to Joel. “Joel, we’re off the air, somebody must have cut the wrong cable up there!” Joel, never to be excited, said, “It’s probably something simple. We need to talk to the Chief Engineer.” So we both rushed over to the Chief’s office and I explained urgently that we were off the air due to some cable cutting and he had to do something right away. The Chief said simply, “OK, I’ll get back to you on that.” He walked into his office and closed the door. Joel said, “Well it’s his problem now.” The Chief was not to be heard from for the rest of the day.
The second was when I was directing the USA dance show all day on a Saturday and we ran into some terrible technical problems that drove the producer pretty much over the brink. He got so edgy that he started taking it out on me, going on an emotional rampage. Finally he said, “If you’re not going to fix this problem this instant, I’m calling Joel at home.” And then he did. Joel talked briefly with the producer and said, “The director is in charge, that’s why I hired him. If you don’t like it, send everybody home.” That was Joel.
Unfortunately for both of us when the TV station was sold, the character of the station was changed forever. We had been working at an intense production level for years due to Joel’s efforts as Production Manager. He had succeeded in bringing in over $2 million a year in just production billing. To the new management, who were unfamiliar with doing any production, it didn’t matter. The studio was going to be shut down regardless of revenue. For me, being only a few years at the station, it was just another step on the career path, for Joel, it was a lifetime, and heart breaking. I think that the few times that I stopped by to chat with Joel at Action, though he was always cheerful and glad to see me, I think it was always bittersweet for him because my just sitting there would always remind him of some of the best times he had at Channel 17, an era I know he always missed. But regardless of the past, Joel should be proud of the fact that he had the courage and the talent to make a world of his own, succeeding at anyone’s measure of success.

To the entire Levitt and Action Family,
Maybe only Mike Taylor & Joel’s son-in-law remember me – I am Mike Kasun from IRIS Technologies & Landro.
As Action was starting to grow, they needed a way to switch video signals to do more video “dubs” and our company made Video Commander. I have been so proud of IRIS’ desire to not sell stuff but solve problems and that we have made some truly great friends through the years because of that philosophy. That was so true with Joel.
At that point in Action history, it was probably a major investment and we could tell our partnership could really have success.
A very, very, dear friend was made when we met Joel Levitt, Mike Taylor and the Action Duplication team from Conshohocken!!
As time passed, our company needed Joel’s help with dvd’s and advice – he helped, always helped! And sometimes, it could be 6 months, a year, between calls – it didn’t matter! It was like two days ago . . picked it right back up!
We all were blessed by Joel in our lives – our deepest sympathies to your family.

I have known Joel since my days at Kremer Laser Eye Center. Joel was more than courteous and professional in the way he dealt with customers. No matter how the industry has evolved Joel has evolved with it, and developed innovative ways to deliver information to potential customers.
My deepest sympathies go out to Joel and his family. Hope is not lost for our heavely father has promised that we can see our loved ones in the future as he promised Job. “If a man die, shall he live again?” asked the man Job long ago. (Job 14:14, King James Version) Perhaps you, too, have wondered about this. How would you feel if you knew that a reunion with your loved ones was possible right here on earth under the best of conditions?
Well, the Bible makes the promise: “Your dead ones will live. . . . They will rise up.” And the Bible also says: “The righteous themselves will possess the earth, and they will reside forever upon it.”—Isaiah 26:19; Psalm 37:29.
I hope this truth brings comfort to Joel’s family and colleagues. I’ll welcome you back to a wonderful life on earth some time in the near future when sickness and death are dissolved.

To the Levitt Family:
I have been “off the grid” for the past week and was terribly saddened this morning when I learned the news of Joel’s passing.
I was a 20 year old sales intern when I met Joel in 1984 and shared with Joel that I was interning in the sales department to get into the station, but my heart was in production. Joel always had time to talk shop with me and always made a point to pull me into the studio control room to make me feel a part of what was going on when I was at WPHL. It was exciting to see him start Action Duplicating. Finally after now having my own business, I got a chance to be a client of his for a few projects that we had. Small though they were, Joel treated me as though I were spending a fortune. The last time I was in his office, we talked for an hour about our children…mostly him talking about Chad, Adam and Sarah. His family was the whole world to him and he let us all know that.
Joel was a terrific person and a true broadcaster. We are all richer for having known him and having him in “the business.” My prayers are with you. God Bless.

I was shocked and saddened to hear the news about Joel. We’ve known one another since the 1970’s through Channel 17. At that time, my partners and I were shooting industrials and commercials on 1” videotape. We’d lug our 1” machine to Channel 17 in attempts to transfer the video to 2” quad tape for air on broadcast television. We attempted this before electronics were designed to do it, so the sessions were always long and tedious. Joel was always patient and supportive with our antics.
Through the years, we occasionally kept in touch. Whenever we spoke, he treated you as an old friend. The video business is not an easy one and when he mortgaged his house to start a dubbing business, it took a lot of courage and belief in oneself. I always had great respect for his courage and stick-to-it-tivness. He was to be admired for taking the challenge, making it work and continually keeping up with technology.
I wish the best for his family and employees and continued success for the business. He was a kind person, a good businessman and a wonderful family man. He will be missed.

I am deeply saddened to learn of Joel’s death. Joel was always a gentleman plus a comrade after a short acquaintance. Our industry has lost an enthusiast and a fine example entrepreneurship. I extend my condolences to his wife and family.

I come to this site late, but scrolling through the names reveals a “Who’s Who” of Philadelphia video communicators. These speak to the breadth of Joel’s influence and the strength of his character. While I was only an infrequent customer of Joel’s, because I needed little duplication work, he was always the first person I turned to. He always responded as though we had just spoken yesterday. If he couldn’t do the job I needed, he’d refer me to another person who could. I don’t believe that was simply a textbook response on how to give great customer service; instead, I could tell it came from a sincere desire to help and to serve. I send my condolences to his family and his colleagues at Action Duplication. I hope all can take comfort in these testimonies to Joel.

Dear Patsy, Joel and Family,
I, like Alice (above), am so very saddened to hear about Joel’s passing. I met Joel in junior high and were friends during our time at Cheltenham High. He, Richard and I were pretty close friends back then. Though we have not kept in touch at all over the years, it was lots of fun to see Joel, Patsy and Richard at the 40th high school reunion in 2004. Times change but people with wonderful souls remain very much the same. I, too, had my own bout with cancer this past year. I had breast cancer and am one of the lucky ones as I am currently doing fine. But I do know how cancer can affect a family and the caregivers, through my own experience. My husband Joel and I send our heartfelt thoughts and feelings to you, Patsy and Richard and your families. Though Joel is very sorely missed, I believe that his wonderful spirit will live on in each of you.
Love,
Karen

I had known Joel since 1980 when we worked together on the Phillies pre-game shows and have followed his professional life since then. He was at the apex of his business career and as I can see from all of those extending their condolences, he will be sorely missed by many people and I am one of them. I extend my deepest sympathy to his family.

I am very sorry to hear om Joel’s pasing. I did not know Joel very well except for a few brief conversation’s by phone, but he was always a friendly competitor in business. We talked occasionally if one of our company’s was in need of a spare part for our CD and DVD replication lines to see if we could help each other out even though we often competed for the same jobs.
I will miss our friendly competition.
My condolences to the Levitt Family.

I have just returned from several weeks in Europe to this terrible news. I have known Joel since he was a one-man show operating out of a back room in someone else’s facility on Germantown Avenue. He was always a class act.
Going to Action Duplication was more than a business transaction. It was a get together with a friend. Joel always had time to talk … always a story or joke to share. We talked about work, but not too often. We talked mostly about friends & family and that’s the way Joel made you feel … like family.
Although my duplication needs were sporadic and usually small Joel always greeted me with the warmest of smiles and was eager to take me on a tour of the facility to show me the latest that Action Duplication had to offer.
My condolences to the entire Levitt family. The world has lost one of its truly good people.

Dear Patsy, Richard and your Families,
Please excuse my mistake above. I kept thinking about Joel and inadvertently addressed my message incorrectly above. Although maybe, unconsciously I was sending him a message as well. Take care.

So sorry to learn of Joel’s passing. It has been a few years since I have spoken to him when I was at RPL. We were competitors but always had much respect for him. He was truly a nice guy.
My condolences to his family and his Action duplication family

In my dealings with Joel he was always professional and a gentleman. He was always pleasant and posessed good energy. He was proud of his company and when he talked about his children his face would light up with pride. Joel was a very good man, we will miss him.

‘… Joel, I know that this is REALLY late- but…’ I started far too many of my conversations with this special person in this manner while either trying to get edit time booked for station promos at 17 or scrambling later on to order client dubs as Sales Manager at Shooters. Usually he would kindly sigh and say something like ” OK this time Ed, but please…”
What a lovely man! I last saw him many years ago at Franklin Field and teased him about sitting on the ‘wrong’ side at the Penn-Cornell game.
Later on we chatted a few times when Chad was drafted by the Raiders and I was working out here in San Francisco. I loved his spirit.
-Sorry I’m late again Joel. Bless you!
